Ashwini Vaishnaw puts BSNL 4G to the test

According to the telecom ministry, Union Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made the first call over an Indian 4G network of state-run telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on Sunday.
Telecom Secretary K Rajaraman called the minister from Chandigarh, where BSNL is testing a proof of concept (PoC) of 4G equipment with Tata Consultancy Services, according to authorities (TCS).
“Made first call on BSNL’s Indian 4G network” (Designed and Made in India). @narendramodi is the Prime Minister of India. In a tweet, Vaishnaw stated, “Ji’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat is taking form.”The minister’s call was the first to be made on an indigenously created network. The development is a sign that BSNL is getting ready to roll out the technology.

The state-run telecom is in the midst of building a pan-India 4G network, which has been hampered by heavy debt. The telecom has requested Rs 40,000 crore in government assistance, half of which it intends to spend on the acquisition of 4G technology created in-house. The government has set aside Rs 24,084 crore for spectrum for 4G services in the current fiscal year. By the end of the calendar year, BSNL intends to have all of its services available to all consumers.

Following last year’s stalemate between Indian and Chinese forces in the Galwan valley, which resulted in the deaths of over 20 Indian soldiers, calls for BSNL to create its own 4G networks gathered traction. NITI Aayog, a government think tank, has previously recommended that the state-owned telecom proceed with an indigenously designed 4G network despite the expense.
However, in September of this year, government nominees on the BSNL board of directors postponed the telecom service provider’s plan to upgrade its current 2G and 3G sites to 4G for the second time.

The upgrading of sites in the south and west zones would cost Rs 567.35 crore, and once approved, the introduction of 4G services in these areas will take three to four months. BSNL is pressing for the upgrade because Indian companies are having trouble rolling out 4G networks across the country.
